Forum Title: SLAM or refill?
First post! I kept a crystal clear pool last summer, but somewhere along the way things got... dark. That's not tea, don't drink it. I'm not sure if I'm better off SLAMing it or just refilling it with this level of fun. Anyone care to weigh in? Between the cost of the chlorine and cleaning the filter several times, then the electricity bill on the pump, would it be any cheaper to just drain and refill it? I need to populate my profile still with the pool specs but: Cartridge filter, approx 20k gallons, no pump to waste so vacuuming the bottom is also a pain. If I didn't give needed information just ask! How'd it get that bad? Pool is under a bunch of big trees (you can see some in that crystal clear reflection). It's probably all sediment from leaves that went through the permeated cover.

Depends on your water costs (metal content?) and your ground water level and pool type. If you have high ground water, draining your pool can end up causing massive damage. And if you have a vinyl pool, you may ruin the liner if you drain more than about half.

With you having a vinyl pool I say NO to draining it all the way down. What I would do is make sure all of the solids are out of the water. THEN get some chlorine and start with a SLAM..........oh wait hold on a you have a good test kit??? We have to start there! I will wait for this answer and go from there.

AH ... if I had opened the picture I would have seen it was a vinyl pool. I would recommend circulating, then running a full set of tests (specifically to see what your CYA is). Then decide if a drain is required. You could always drain half (leave at least 1 foot of water in the shallow end) ... or do a lot of vacuuming to waste ... add a 3-way valve between the pump and filter.
